Improved access for families with children in Rhein-Sieg, Germany

The Pilot Lab Rhein-Sieg focused on the question of which measures help to strengthen the independent mobility of children; not least, in order to reduce the high rate of parents who bring or collect their children too many times. To this end, a local survey was conducted to determine where residents saw the greatest need. Measures were developed on the basis of the responses and implemented from August 2019. In February and March of this year, immediately before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, an after-survey was conducted to find out whether the implemented measures were successful.

Despite the short time span between the implementation of measures and the survey, initial successes have already been noted. For example, the number of journeys made by children on foot or by bicycle has increased for routes such as travelling to school, while the number of trips by car has fallen. The implemented measures were also rated as ‘very good’ or ‘good’ overall and considered to be quite helpful. It is good that three measures; namely, the additional journeys on bus route 532, the reduction of the ticket price to Hennef and the mobility card will be maintained beyond the end of the INCLUSION project.
